Frank's Wedding is the nineteenth episode from Season 8 of Modern Family. It aired on April 5, 2017.

Summary[]

Frank Dunphy's Roaring 20s-themed wedding day is finally here, and to get into the spirit, Phil gets the Dunphy clan to show up in costume. Once Claire and the kids realize they are the only ones dressed-up, they feel it’s time for a "funny" intervention with Phil. Meanwhile, Jay has mastered the art of saying no, but soon realizes that if you say no too many times, people stop asking; and Cam is in for a big surprise when he finally stops hiding behind Mitchell and stands up to his sister Pam.[1]

Plot[]

Phil takes Claire and the kids to his father's wedding. Even though it is a themed wedding, they are the only dressed in costumes. The Dunphys rally against Phil, whose excessive fun they deem as the cause of their embarrassment. Claire convinces him to tone down his fun side, and talks him out of his involvement in his father’s planned prank on his bride at the altar. Phil sees his wife’s reason and agrees to be more serious. Shortly afterwards, Lorraine confides in Claire that she accepted Frank’s proposal because he is fun and he makes her laugh, unlike her previous husbands, making Claire realise her mistake. Seeing Phil bore the congregation during the ceremony, Claire and the kids carry out Frank’s prank that she previously talked Phil out of doing, and are supported by Lorraine. A proud Phil reverts to his fun-loving self.

Meanwhile, Jay is pleased that no one in his family is asking for his help in doing chores after he has perfected the art of saying no. While his family is engaged in activities that he is not a part of, he tries to get rid of Joe’s old crib that Gloria is supposedly too attached to. The crib miraculously survives Jay’s attempts, much to his displeasure. As he is resting downstairs, he hears his family having fun painting Joe’s room without him. He realises that if one says no too often, people just stop asking — and the person will feel left out. He joins his family in another painting project.

At the Pritchett-Tucker home, Cam selfishly tries to coax Mitchell to agree with his criticism of his sister Pam so that he can use Mitchell’s name to air out his grievances, so that Pam will hate Mitch and not him. Throughout Pam’s inconvenient stay in their home and presence in their lives, the cowardly Cam pushes Mitch to voice out against Pam, which Mitch refuses to do. He puts his foot down and tells Cam off for his habit of using him as a shield because he is too afraid to stand up to his sister. Cam still does not confront Pam as Mitch wanted him to, and instead escapes. Pam becomes mad at Mitch when he inadvertently interferes in her job search, revealing to him that she came to California looking for a job because she is very pregnant and her husband is in jail.

Can and Pam reconcile right before Pam gives birth to a son. Jay, Gloria, Manny, and Joe give Pam a present: Joe’s old cradle that they’ve repainted. When Mitch suggests to Cam to let Pam and the baby stay at the apartment upstairs, Cam annoyingly drops Mitch’s name when presenting the idea to Pam and claims it as his own, much to Mitch’s exasperation.
